Zebra Rides Shotgun in Iowa

Jerald Reiter and Vickey Teters live in Dubuque, USA. The story below gives the gist of Reiter’s arrest outside The Dog House Lounge, intoxicated (behind the wheel of his pickup), headed for a little jaunt, with his pets in the front seat. One of whom is a young zebra and the other a large macaw.

But the real story here is the reporter who covered the aftermath, and if you didn’t know the value of reporters had diminished to zero, check out the video on KCRG because the journalism there was a felony.

Now the problem I have with this is NOT the delightful discovery of such independent originals as Reiters and Teters and the high tolerance level in Dubuque for American individualism.

It was that the reporter, not on camera, probably valedictorian in journalism school, only asked this… Had the zebra and parrot had been left inside the truck in the sun without the window rolled down.

Whoa. So every day zebra are riding shotgun in Dubuque, cause I may move there. Even more astounding was that the entire interview was conducted with a static camera shot of the wonderful Ms Teters, the macaw beside her…but the zebra, who was standing right there the whole time…in her kitchen, well only the ears and a bit of bristly mane showed on camera a couple of seconds.

Yo! Dubuque! I love you like I love my country. But come on. Next time show us the zebra. And KCRG, fire the numbnuts reporter, please. And send some alfalfa to Teters and the gang. And buy a round for everybody at The Dog House Lounge.

DUBUQUE, Iowa – It sounds like the beginning of a joke. A man, a zebra, a parrot walk into a bar.
A Cascade man was arrested outside of a Dubuque bar on Sunday night with a pet zebra and a macaw parrot in the front seat of his truck.
Officers charged Jerald Reiter, 55, with OWI. Police reports say officers stopped him in the parking lot of the Dog House Lounge as he drove away in his truck. According to police, field sobriety tests showed Reiter had a blood alcohol level of .14. The legal limit in Iowa is .08.
Reiter tells KCRG.com that he and his girlfriend, Vickey Teters, see the animals like their kids and often take them for rides. On Sunday night, they say they took the zebra and the macaw to the bar because it often lets people bring their animals inside.
